Grapefruit: Take your fat burn up 10x
Sometimes it just takes a little explaination to help eveyone--trainers, clients, and general workout enthusiasts. This morning I thought I'd share some details about my love for grapefruit! As part of a regular breakfast, this wonderful fruit can jump start your fat burning goals for the day.
Grapefruit is a rich source (>20% of the Daily Value, DV in a 100 gram serving) of vitamin C, contains the fiber pectin, and the pink and red hues contain the beneficial antioxidant lycopene. Studies have shown grapefruit helps lower cholesterol, and there is evidence that the seeds have antioxidant properties. Grapefruit forms a core part of the "grapefruit diet", the theory being that the fruit's low glycemic index is able to help the body's metabolism burn fat.
Thank God for Wikipedia! It takes all the boring science jargon and lets me just simply copy and paste :D It's not that I don't want you to know about that, it's that I want you to get straight to putting it to work! So, that being said, here's where the magic of grapefruit comes into play:
This happens in two ways. One is that grapefruit can block an enzyme which metabolizes medication. If the drug is not metabolized, then the level of the drug in the blood can become too high leading to an adverse effect. The other effect is that grapefruit can block the absorption of drugs in the intestine. If the drug is not absorbed, then not enough of it is in the blood to have a therapeutic effect.
Now, I am NOT an advocate of drug overdoses, or adverse side effects. But what I am interested in is how grapefruits and their juice block a metabolic enzyme; thereby, leaving higher concentrations of certain substances in the bloodstream.
Again, I am not advocating drug overdoses here, but for those of you out there who do not take cholesterol or blood pressure medication, you have a golden ticket to ramping up your metabolic rate every single morning! And may not even know it...
How? Just by eat it and I lose fat? Nope.
As you know, simply setting the environment for success doesn't ensure sucess, you must have a catalyst. You must take ACTION. The good news is that if you're reading this while eating your morning breakfast, your catalyst is probably already in your hand.
That's right: COFFEE.
Caffeine is a drug. A great drug. It enhances metabolic function, encourages lypolosis (fat burning), reduces your appetite, and helps enhance focus. Best. Drug. Ever. And what better way to get more of those helpful effects than allowing all that wonderful cafffeine to stay in the system longer by adding 1/2 of a grapefruit?
It's like getting 10x the fat burn for your workout buck! Pair that 1/2 grapefruit up with some nice peppered egg whites and you'll have a breakfast fit for a champion.
